Quake is a game of constant strategy and adaptation. Simply relying on aiming and item timings will not win you games against skilled players.
As the Sun Tzu series comes to a close with Quake, there seems to be a reoccurring theme in what Sun Tzu focuses on, and that is how you think, adapt and prepare for each situation, so keep that in mind.
You can read it HERE.

Everything I've been learning in the past 6 months just got summed in 1 article out of how to deal with each situation in theory.
6“Thus if I determine the enemy’s disposition of forces while I have
no perceptible form, I can concentrate my forces while the enemy is
fragmented. If we are concentrated into a single force while he is
fragmented into ten, then we attack him with ten times his strength.
Thus we are many and the enemy is few. If we can attack his few with
our many, those who we engage in battle will be severely constrained.”
Using things such as spam rockets/grenades to determine where your
opponent is will allow you to react to his position where he is left
guessing where you are from your rocket position. Using this
information to your advantage in terms of preparing to catch him off
guard and get the upper hand is what will give you the edge over him
and allow you to get that frag and then hunt for a spawn frag.
Care to explain this more thoroughly?

Yes of course.
In every game, no matter if its an RTS or FPS you need to scout*. In Quake scouting is different than in SC or Wc3, you can't really 'send a unit' to probe your opponents location. However you can use your rockets, grenades, and if you are really lucky, rails to figure out where your opponent is while he still has no clue where you are.
If you know where your opponent is, you have more information than they do. You now know where he is, you now know in relation to what area of the map he is in, what the best possible attack/ambush scenario is, and you might even get a clue on what timings he has.
Also, if it is a close match and you need to find your opponent and he is hiding, you can seek him out faster via spam rockets and grenades.
You can also use the information to setup on him better. For instance if you just caught him with a spam rocket, or possibly 2 grenades, you know where he is, and you will know exactly what angle to attack from that best compliments you. As well, you will know what to hit him with, as you will know how much damage you did to him, and if you were doing timings correctly, you will have a rough idea of what sort of stack he has.
Hope that helped.
